Mesna belongs to a general group of drugs known as cytoprotective agents. It is used to decrease the risk of bleeding in the bladder due to ifosfamide or high¨Cdose cyclophosphamide.
Mesna is a pill given by mouth or as an injection in a vein. It is usually given by vein over 15 minutes or a pill prior to the chemotherapy drug ifosfamide, then every 3 to 4 hours for 3 to 4 doses. It can also be given along with ifosfamide when given continuously for 24 hours for 3 or more days. Mesna is given for an additional 24 hours when given this way.
